Getting started

Section 211 of the Land Transport Act 1998 provides any person with the opportunity to request a Traffic Crash Report (TCR) held by the New Zealand Police.

Any request for a TCR from a person involved in the crash, either directly or as a recorded witness or informant, is subject to release provisions outlined under the Privacy Act 2020.

You can expect the information to be made available unless there is good reason to withhold it.

Things to note before making your request

If you are from an insurance company and are requesting your customer’s TCR, please use this form:

If you are requesting information about a non-traffic crash related incident, or more information than a TCR, please use this form:

NZ Police requires some personal details to process your request:

  • Police need to be satisfied as to your identity, so we require your name, date of birth, and evidence of your identity.
  • To deliver a response to your request, we ask for an email address or postal address.
  • To contact you if we need to clarify your request, it would be helpful if you provide a phone number.

To submit a request online, you will need the following documents:

  1. One form of photographic ID; or, two forms of non-photographic ID
    AND
  2. A clear photograph of yourself holding your ID; or, an identity referee’s written statement (see note below)

If you are making this request on behalf of someone else, you will also need:

  1. One form of their photographic ID; or, two forms of their non-photographic ID
    AND
  2. A clear photograph of them holding their ID; or, an identity referee’s written statement (see note below)
    AND
  3. Evidence of an authority to act for them in making this request, such as signed authority, or power of attorney.
