Police should only be requested as a last resort, or when Police powers or capabilities are required.

Categories:

Non-Emergency Request (Any response is likely to be within hours based on resourcing and prioritisation)
The risk does not require an emergency response, but Police powers or capabilities are required to prevent future
significant harm because:

  • the situation is becoming unmanageable; and/or
  • there is no suitable alternative to manage the risk.

Often in MH(CAT) Act assessment and treatment situations it may not be practicable to obtain a warrant.

Non-Emergency planned intervention (ideally over the next few days)
The risk is manageable in the short-term, but Police powers or capabilities are required to prevent further deterioration
and escalation of risk. Often in MH(CAT) Act assessment and treatment situations it will be practicable to obtain a warrant and/or schedule a coordinated, co-response.
